Located on
an overhanging cliff in the Mt. Lingyun on the eastern bank at the
conjunction of the Minjiang, Dadu River and Qingyi River, the statue and
the Leshan town face each other across the water. This statue, 71 meters
high, is also called "Lingyun Statue of Buddha". Its shoulders
are 28 meters broad and its head is 14.7 meters long and 10 meters
broad. Its ear can support a man and its foot can hold 100 people. As
the biggest stone carving in the world, the statue was cut in the Tang
dynasty (618-907). The project was so huge that construction lasted 90
years. There is a well-designed drainage system under the statue. It has
been well preserved for over 1, 200. |
