| Zigong city is
in the southern part of the Sichuan Basin, 200km south of Chengdu. The
city has been known since ancient times for the well salt it produces.
It is called the "capital of salt in China" and is still the
largest well salt producer in the country. It is also where dinosaur
fossils and related scientific records were first discovered in the
Sichuan Basin, and hence it is referred to as the home of dinosaurs. As
early as the Tang dynasty, the people of Zigong began to hang lanterns
during the Chinese New Year holidays. The habit developed into the New
Year Lantern Show. In the post decade and more, the local people added
cultural, scientific, technological, economic, and trade items to the
traditional lantern show. On the occasion, the site of the lantern show
is a sea of lanterns, creating a magnificent sight.
