Language of Qiang Ethnic Minority


     The Qiangs do not have a written script of their own. They speak a language belonging to the Tibetan-Myanmese language family of the Chinese-Tibetan system. Owing to their close contact with the Han people, many Qiang people speak Chinese, which is also the written form for this ethnic group.  

    There are about 140,000 Qiang people and Tibetan  speaking Qiang languang. Due to the geography, mountains and rivers there, isolated each other in history, the dialect are vary differ from town to town and village to village. So there are 2 dialects in it's Northern area and Southern area, Northern dialect speaks without tone, and Southern dialect with tone. Northern dialect has 9 sub-dialects such as: Zhengping, Qugu, Huilong, Heifu, Weimen, Weigu, Cimulin, Mawo, Luhua; Southern dialects has 6 sub-dialects such as: Yanmen, Longxi, Mianchi, Puxi, Muka, Taoping. 

    Recently, Japanese researcher found that some Qiang people  speaking like the Japanese speaking, so he guess that the Japanese originated from Qiang Language.
