Marriage of Qiang People |
|
|
|
Marriages, mainly monogamous, were
arranged by parents in the past. Usually, the wives were several years
older than their husbands. It was common for cousins to marry and for
bridegrooms to live with their wives' families. And it still is not
unusual for brides to live in their parents' houses within a year or so
after marriage. In Qiang society, younger brothers could make their
widowed sister-in-laws their wives and elder brothers could marry the
widows of their younger brothers. Such habits have been gradually
discarded since liberation. Step one, set up engaging relations between 2 families; 2nd, first engagement, boy side make banquet in girl's family and gifts to girl's side while both reach to engaging age ; 3rd, normal engagement, boy side make invitation all members of girl's side for banquet, and gifts to girl's side, discuss to settle up the date of wedding ceremony; 4th, pick the girl to boy's family; 5th, normal ceremony of marriage held in a hall faced to the boy's parents; 6th, back to girl's family, boy and his brother shall send bride back to her family after 3days of wedding, and some will stay about 1-3 years in her family. |
