2008 Beijing Olympic
Game Will Be Opened on 08Aug 2008 |
|
The
Olympic Games have yet to be hosted by China, the most populous
nation in the world.
After its initial proud endeavor to be the host city for the
Olympic Games, Beijing has continued its pursuit, and
respectfully again submits its candidature for the 2008 Olympic
Games.
Central to this decision is our genuine desire to further
promote and popularize the Olympic Ideal and Olympic Moment in
China and across the world. The Olympic Moment is a noble
endeavor with the aim to promote understanding and friendship
between peoples, and safeguard world peace through the means of
sport. We earnestly hope to strength this noble cause by hosting
the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
By hosting the Games, Beijing and China will be further opened
to the world. Its economic development and social progress will
be accelerated. The whole world will get to know Beijing and
China better, and it will further integrate Beijing and China
into the world. Of major importance will be invigoration of the
Chinese people's interest in Olympic sport and further
strengthening of China's contribution to international sport.
The concept we have proposed for Beijing as a host city of the
2008 Olympic Games may be summed up in these words: Harmony
between man and nature; blend of sport and culture; essential
application of rapidly developing information technologies.

Emblem
The emblem resembles a person
doing "taiji" , symbolizing gracefulness, harmony,
vitality and mobility as well as unity, cooperation, exchange
and development.
The
Selection of Emblem
More than 2,000 designs were
sent to BOBICO. Ten of them were finally selected. Han Meilin, a
well-known designer and member of the general selection
committee, flew to Shenzhen to appraise the selected designs.
All ten designs were excellent, but none of them seemed to
captured the broad range of subjects. He asked his colleagues to
think of other possible emblems. |

Chen
Shaohua, a noted designer in Shenzhen and one of the 13 official
emblem designers appointed by BOGBC, came up with the idea of
scanning his computer for draft designs he had made. Among his
draft designs, he found one design called "Chinese Hearts
Unite". But how could the image of the Olympic Games be
integrated with China's traditional sports culture? Chen Shaohua
thought of Taiji shadow boxing. He made a sketch of a man
practising Taiji. This is how the initial design came into
being.
Han Meilin was so engrossed in
his design that he made numerous modifications and improvements
before submitting his draft to the general selection committee.
It caught the attention of the committee members and was finally
selected as BOBICO's emblem. Han Meilin then modified the design
by using a calligraphy brush. " Han Meilin has brought the
emblem to life with his brush", said Chen Shaohua.
Chen faxed the design to Hong
Kong's famous designer Kan Tai-Keung. Kan said that
"Beijing" and the year "2008" should be
added. The three designers discussed their ideas on the phone
for two days before the emblem of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Bid Committee was finally selected.
Motto
New
Beijing, Great Olympics
Reform and opening up to the outside world have
brought about great changes in Beijing, a city with a 3,000-year
history. The city has taken on a completely new look as it
enters the new century. It will embrace the athletes and friends
from the rest of the world attending the Olympic Games with
great enthusiasm.
The great modern Olympic
Movement has gone through many changes in the past 100 years.
Should the Olympic Games be held in China, the most populous
nation in the world, the Olympic spirit will be even further
disseminated and a new page will be turned in the Olympic
history; and the Olympic Movement will show its unique splendor
to the world in the new millennium.
