China Merganser, or Scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus, Chinese Merganser), (Zhonghua Qiushaya in Chinese), distribute mainly in Jiangxi and Changbaishan (Changbai Mountain), and Xiaoxinganling, as it be birdwatching in Jiangxi Yiyang and Wuyuan, and Dailing China Merganser (Scaly-sided merganser, Mergus squamaturs) Nature Reserve in Yichun, Heilongjiang province. This species listed as Vulnerable in the 2001 red list (Threatened Birds of Asia book) .

Records of the wintering Scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus, China Merganser, Chinese Merganser) so far had been reported widely scattered in China, and the bird usually found in small flock or in individuals with quite rare of a case of more than 10 birds gathered at one locality. During the 1990s, though results of surveys revealed a few wintering flocks of the bird but no longer reported being stable. Since the beginning the 21st century, relatively larger wintering flock of the bird were successively reported found at several localities in NE Jiangxi of SE China, with at least over 100 birds in total, and, number of the birds of each flock either at Yiyang or at Wuyuan in Jiangxi has more than 1 % of the far known world population of the Chinese Scaly-sided Merganser. More attention might hence be paid on the conservation management of that wintering subpopulation of the bird.

Usually winter season from Oct to Apr living in southern area of China, special in Yiyang and Wuyuan, birding season from Nov to March, the best gethering birding watch China Merganser or Scaly-sided meerganser or Chinese Merganser, Mergus Squamaturs are Xinjiang River and Le'anhe River area in Yichang and Wuyuan, as well as Yuanyang Lake in Wuyuan. And there is a Nature Reservei for China Merganser (established by Yicyang County)

In summer season, China Merganser or Scaly-sided meerganser, Mergus Squamaturs immgrants to northern area of China, living in wetland of both Xin'anling and Changbaishan mountain. And there is an nature reserve aimed to protect China Merganser or Scaly-sided meerganser, Mergus Squamaturs: Dailing China Merganser Protected Reserve (Province), which Longitude is 128°50'34-128°58'35 degrees east, latitude is 47°04'52 -47°08'40 degrees north, covers an area of 1462 Hectares.  Dailing, Yichun city, 350KM to Harbin, presumably inside Bishui Chinese Merganser Nature reserve,  the number of Scaly-sided Mergansers shot has increased to 80–100 birds  even more right now.  And in this nature reserve, you can birdwathing scaly-sided merganser(Mergus squamatus ), golden eagle(Aquila chrysaetos), red-crowned crane(Grus japonensis ), whooper swan(Cygnus cygnus), mandarin duck(Aix galericulata), eurasian sparrowhawk(Accipiter nisus), black grouse(Tetrao tetrix), otter(Lutra lutra), North-east hare(Lepus timidus), red deer(Cervus elaphus), Sibian musk deer etc, total about 254 species of birds. Test in artficial breeding China Merganser, you can visit Breeding Base in Dailing, better birding time: April to June.
