Grus Leucogeranus (Siberian white crane), Classified as Critically Endangered, is one of the 1st class protection rare birds in China, and is the third most endangered crane species in the world. This species, 130cm in length, has white plumage, and can be identified by the white cap and red mask, which reaches from behind the eye to the bill. In juveniles, this mask is feathered and the body is cinnamon or buff-coloured Males are similar in appearance to females but are slightly larger, and the flute-like calls of this species are unique amongst cranes. There are three distinct population, and the largest in the northeast of Siberia, so name it. This white crane migrates about 1500kms to Yangtze river in China to over winter, and Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province, China, is the largest place for them to overwinter. Another migrates 1850kms to Rajasthan in India, most at Keoladeo National Park for winter days. The Siberian white crane uses wetlands for feeding, nesting and roosting, preferring wide areas of shallow fresh water with good visibility. The nest is a flat mound of grasses and sedges, which rises around 12 - 15 cm above the water level. Eggs are laid between May and mid-June, and although 2 eggs are usually produced just one chick is reared successfully. brooding about 30days, breeding in Siberia, Helongjiang, Inner Mongolia. While on the breeding grounds, the Siberian crane feeds on plants, roots, seeds, and berries. After 85days of the brook to the world, the young can fly in sky . Crane is an important symbol to the people of China, Japan and other Asian countries. It typically represents long life, peace, happiness and fidelity. |
