The island, covers an area of 1,083 sq. km, is the largest sandy island of any river mouth in China, where the river empties into the East Sea on the west Pacific. Dongtan Birds Nature Reserve (121º50'-122º05'E and 31º25'-31º38'N) covers an area of 8468.7 hectares, locate at the east end of Chongming Island (31º30'N and 121º45'′E) and it is one of the island's main deposit area for silt runoff. It also has the most potential for growth of any other part of the island, with altituede of 4.2M. Currently, it is expanding outwards at 140 meters per year. Annual average temperature in Dongtan is 15.3º, and the hottest days are in July and August, when the average temperature is 27.5º. The coldest days are in January, when the average temperature is 2.9º. There is substantial annual rainfall with an annual average of 1117 mm. There are 3 parties such as Tuanjiasha, Dongwangsha and new beach set aside for cultivation, as well as the largest wetland located the mouth of Yangtze River. There are clear borders between bands of common reeds, dense grass and bare beach, as well as many tide ditches. Varieties of biological resources such as: marine life; marine fishing; beach biological resources; natural fauna and flora; native plants etc. With huge shallows and mudflat, Dongtan Wetlands host to the migrant while migtating as its home for winter with its rich plants and animals, recorded birds about 312 species of birds with 47 species of national important protecting birds. And about 100 species of birds to be there for winter with population of 2000000-3000000 birds. Among them are four species under Grade 1 National Protection: Ciconia ciconia, Grus monacha, Mergus squamatus, Ciconia nigra.
