Back to China Birds Birding in Jiangkou Dongting Dongtinghu Lake Nature Reserve, set up in 1982, and upgrade as National Reserve in 1994, located at 28°59′-29°38′N, 112°43′-113°15′E, is a wetland, at the middle ranges of Yangtze River, covers an area of 190000 ha, play important in both breeding and wintering place for birds. There are 234 species of birds in the nature reserve. The rare birds are: White Crane, hooded crane (Grus monacha), White Stork ( Ciconia ciconia ), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Chinese mnerganser (Mergus spuamatus Gluld), common crane (Grus grus) etc. Lesser White-Fronted Goose wintering there about 13700 birds, account over 80% of this birds in the world. And Recurvirostra avosetta wintering there about 11000 birds in Xiaoxihu Lake and Caisanghu Lake. Better time
