White crowned long tailed Reeves's Pheasant

Dongzhai nature reserve situated in the south Luoshan County, in Dabie Mountain, Xinyang, Henan Province. Dongzhai Nature Reserve was established in 1982 mainly to protect the amazingly long tailed Reeves's Pheasant.Habitats, the Reeve’s Pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii) under guidance of the late World-famous Chinese ornithologist Zheng Zuoxin. In 2001, the reserve was upgraded to national level nature reserve, E114°18’--114°30’, N 31°28’--32°09’. 1897 categories of plants, more than 2000 kinds of insects, mammals 37 kinds, 304 species of birds.

With a population of around 1500 Reeve’s pheasants, with a research / breeding base of Reeves's pheasants (White Crowned Long Tailed Pheasant),  the reserve has 304 recorded bird species, accounting for 80% of total bird species in Henan Province or 20% of the total in China. Located in the transitional area between Palaeartic realm and Oriental realm, the reserve has birds from both realms. Other rare birds are Fairy Pitta,Orange-headed Thrush,Japanese Thrush,owls,Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher,Blue-throated Bee-eater etc. And Crested Ibis from Shaanxi is planned to be reintroduced into this area.

Birding area and wild photography site:
Wangdawan Village and Dongqiao area. the village is surrounded by large trees, bushes, paddy fields, vegetable gardens, pools and a stream, making it an ideal place for bird-watching, especially in May and June during the breeding season.
Lingshan Forest Park - Dongqiao area, 8 km. Blue-throated Bee-eater, pheasants.
Baiyun station of Dongzhai Nature Reserve. The hilly area is the natural habitat of the rare Peeves's Pheasants White Crowned Long Tailed Pheasant and Fairy Pittas. Statistics show that 304 bird species have been found in the area.
Zhangqiao - Shegang area, 4 km, farmland, wetland, pheasants.

Time and duration:
May - June is the best time.
2days at least, better 3-4 days birdwatching time.
