Zhalong Nature Reserve, 47°12'N 124°12'E, alt 140-146m, located at the lower reaches of Wuyuer River, a tributary of the Nenjiang River and to the southeast of the Qiqihar City in the west of Heilongjiang Province, the Zhalong Nature Reserve was created in 1979, and upgraded as national nature reserve in 1987,  with an area of 210,000 hectares, anuual rainfall 402.7mm, average temperature 3.9ºC. 

Vegetation in the area includes meadow prairie, wet meadow, marshy vegetation and aquatic vegetation. The extensive reed marshes in the reserve provide a habitat for breeding waterbirds.

The Reserve houses 260 species of birds, over 20 species of them are under state key protection. 6 of the China's 9 species of cranes are found now Zhalong Nature Reserve, the rarest and top protected crane are Red —crowned crane, white — naped crane, white crane, white-headed crane, demoiselle crane and grey crane. Famous for its homeland to cranes.
The red crowned crane is also the Chinese symbol of longevity.

The better time to watch birds in from Apr to Sep, better in May and Jun.

The better place to watch birds: Zhalong Lake (south lake, north lake etc), Xigouzi and Crane Birding Tower for cranes; Jiujianfang, Dachangzi, Tumukexigang etx.
