The Islam began to spread over China speedily after Islam had been introduced to Tang Emperor Gaozong in 651AD, then Arabian and Persian traders came to China for business via two routes: the land road began in Persia, traversed Xinjiang, the Silk Toad, and then terminated in the  inland cities of China; the maritime route from Persian Gulf, Malay Peninsula, then arrived southeast coasts of China.

The development of Islam resulted in many Moslem sites and architecture, unique food, folks etc. For example, the ceremony of giving a newborn baby Muslim name, wedding and funeral; Muslims' dining habits such as Halal food; daily performing daily pray; Pilgrimage to Mecca; Jingtangjiaoyu (means education in Mosque. Chinese unique style in Islamic education, open schools at the mosques to provide Islamic Education) and Islamic School Education. Till now, there are high-level Islamic schools as: China Islamic Institute (set up in 1955 by China Islamic Association) and 9 provincial Islamic institutes (located at Beijing, Hebie, Shenyang, Zhengzhou, Kunming, Ningxia, Lanzhou, Xining, Urumqi).

Now with total population of more than 20400000 muslims living in China, with 35000 mosques and 45000 Imams (Mullahs) in China, most of them distributes in Gansu, Xinjiang and Ningxia. And Muslims in China belong to the Sunni, following Hanafiyyah in Sharia.
There are ten minority groups in China believe in Islam, and also some Muslims from other peoples. The ten minority groups are (Minority name, population, distribution. some population for 2003, and most are estimated for reference only):

There are 2 Autonomous Regions(Ningxia and Xinjiang) and Gansu Province with most muslim population distribution in China. And Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture is known as the small Mecca of China----where you can enjoy the really Moslem folks and life, another Autonomous Prefecture is Changji in Xinjiang; 6 autonomous counties such as Mengxian county and Dachang county in Hebei province, Menyuan county and Hualong county in Qinghai, Zhangjiachuan county in Gansu, one in Xinjiang, and others are union autonomous county; 4 autonomous districts such as Huizu district in Hohhot, Guancheng district in Zhenzhou, Shunhe district in Kaifeng, Dueh district in Luoyang; More then 140 townships.
Most Muslim people living in the area around Mosque, in Beijing as Niujie street and Dewai district, and in Beijing about 59 villages for Muslim living area, in Yinchuan as Nanguan Mosque in Ningxia, Gongguan Mosque in Xining, Xida street around Huajue Mosque in Xi'an, Zhenjiao Mosque in Hanghzou, Jingjue Mosque in Nanjing, Zhengzhou Mosque in Zhenzhou.

Qinghai: Dongguan Mosque.
Gansu: Many Mosques in  Linxia.
