Attractive Sites Along Three Gorges

  • CHONGQING
    Chongqing, a city of 2,000 years old, is located at the confluence of the Jialing River and the Changjiang River. Surrounded by mountains, it is known as "the mountain city" or "the foggy city". In the outskirts of the city, in addition to Mt. Jinyun is Pipa Shan Park. From there the night views of Chongqing are spectacular. 
  • WUHAN
    Wuhan is an important city in the central part of China. As an important hub of north-south, west-east water and land communications, it is considered "a passage way to nine provinces". Among scenic spots in the city are "Yellow Crane Tower", "The Guiyuan Temple", and the "East Lake".


  • YICHANG
    Yichang, a modern city, is situated at the entrance of Xiling Gorge. It was formerly aplace contested by warlords and a battlefield of the "Yiling War" in the Three Kingdoms Period. On the outskirts of the city, there are the splendid Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project (see the picture at the right), Three Travellers' Cave, Taohua Village of Peach Blossom), Research Institute of Chinese Sturgeon, Ruins of Ancient Fortress, etc. The craft of Painted Pottery is well-known for its distinguishing feature.

  • SHASHI(Jingzhou)
    Jingzhou, a well-preserved ancient city, was also a place for its strategic importance. Many historical relics are unearthed here, among which the bronze articles, silk and lacquered wares are very notable. Amore than 2000-year-old male body in the museum is the most ancient corpse in a good state of preservation in China.
  • FENGDU
    Fengdu, with fantastic temples of underworld demons and gods, is constructed on the Mingshan Hill by the river band. It is known as the "Ghost City" and is a place for punishing the devil and awarding the good.
  • SHIBAOZHAI
    Shibaozhai architecture consists of three parts: the gate, the pagoda and the temple on the top. A nine story red wooden pagoda with upturned eaves 50m high, dates back to the Qing Dynasty. Stairs to the top give a magnificent view over the river.
  • WANXIAN
    One of the most important and largest ports on the Yangtze. It is widely known for its variety and hustling markets. Fifty percent of the city will be resettled after the Three Gorges Dam Project is completed.


  • BAIDI CITY
    Baidi (White Emperor) is located at the entrance of the Qutang Gorge. Many historic sites and stories about Three Kingdoms have evolved from here. Preserved in the Baidi City are poems, carvings and other cultural relics of the Sui, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
  • Small Three GORGES One of the most spectacular sights in China. They are similar to the great Three Gorges, but narrower and more impressive, with clear, fast flowing water and precipices and peaks towering to the sky.

  • WUSHAN, The Three Small Gorges, referring to the three separate valleys of the Daning River, are respectively, Dragon-Gate Gorge, Misty Gorge and Emerald Gorge. You can take a small junk to enjoy these marvellous spectacles of nature.
  • SHENNONG STREAM
    Shennong Stream, a small tributary of the Yangtze with shallow rapids and breathtaking gorges. While sailing upstream, you will see many hanging coffins at the high cliffs.

  • ZIGUI
    Zigui is located at the exit of Xiling Gorge, near which Xiangxi (Fragrant Stream) joins the Yangtze River. There erected a tomb and a memorial pavilion for Qu Yuan, a great patriotic poet in ancient China. One may take a dragon boat in the Fragrant Stream and see the native town of Wang Zhaojun, a famous beauty in ancient Chinese history.
